Safety Shower And Emergency Eyewash
A safety shower and emergency eyewash station is a type of first-aid equipment primarily used when hazardous chemicals particularly corrosive acids or alkalis come into direct contact with a person’s eyes, face, or other parts of the body. In such cases, the first and most critical action is to flush and dilute the chemical using copious amounts of water via the safety shower and eyewash station.
Any delay in treatment under these circumstances can lead to severe injuries, long-term health consequences, permanent disability, or even death. Therefore, selecting an appropriate safety shower and eyewash station is of utmost importance.

Safety showers and eyewash units are designed and manufactured in various models.
Depending on the intended application, they may be freestanding (floor-mounted) or benchtop (table-mounted) and are typically constructed from acid-resistant, corrosion-proof materials.
The internationally recognized standard ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2014 defines the minimum requirements for operation, installation procedures, testing protocols, maintenance, and safety training for all types of safety showers and eyewash stations. This standard also includes critical occupational health and safety guidelines for workers and contractors who may be exposed to hazardous chemicals.
Installation Location Requirements :
The unit must be installed within 15–30 meters of the hazard source.
The installation location must be highly visible, clearly marked, and unobstructed at all times. A suitable sign should be installed to identify its position.
If installed outdoors, the system must be protected against freezing.
According to ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2014, the unit must be reachable within 10 seconds on the same level (not on a different floor). This 10-second requirement may be reduced in cases involving highly hazardous chemicals.
Technical Specifications :
Safety Shower: Must deliver at least 76 liters (20 US gallons) per minute for a continuous duration of 15 minutes.
Eye/Face Wash: Must deliver at least 11.4 liters (3 US gallons) per minute for more than 15 minutes to ensure complete decontamination. Depending on the chemical type and concentration, this flushing period may be extended up to 60 minutes under international standards.
Water Temperature: The flushing water must be tepid, between 16°C and 38°C. Water above 38°C can increase burn severity and chemical absorption through the skin and eyes, while water below 16°C may cause shock and prevent effective flushing for the required duration.
Training Requirements :
Given their use in industries such as power plants, oil refineries, petrochemical complexes, steel manufacturing, cosmetics, parmaceuticals, battery production, electroplating, and laboratory environments, it is essential that all personnel who may be exposed to hazardous chemicals receive proper training in the safe and correct use of safety showers and eyewash stations.
Workers must also be familiar with the unit’s location, and operating instructions should be readily available to all employees and posted near the equipment.
